# Why does my child still talk like a baby?

> “They can talk normally. So why do they keep slipping into that baby voice?”

If you’ve asked that question hundreds of times, you’re not alone.

An older child using a younger voice isn’t necessarily simply choosing to be annoying or refusing to grow up. For some children, younger-sounding speech can appear during stress, insecurity, overwhelm or moments when they are seeking comfort. For others, it may have become such an automatic habit that they barely notice they’re doing it.

And sometimes, what sounds like a “baby voice” to a parent may have a different explanation altogether.

Chippup starts somewhere different.

Not

“Stop talking like a baby.”

But

“Let’s work out when your voice changes — and help you learn how to find the voice you want to use.”

## They might genuinely not realise they’re doing it.

Some children can switch voices easily when somebody points it out. Others can’t.

A behaviour that started in particular situations can become fast and automatic. By the time a parent says, “Use your normal voice,” the child may already be speaking that way without consciously deciding to.

That changes the problem.

If awareness and control are part of what’s missing, another reminder may not teach the skill the child actually needs.

## Baby voice can mean different things in different children.

### Comfort

Some younger behaviours can appear when children are stressed, frightened, overwhelmed or seeking safety and connection.

### Insecurity

For some children, younger-sounding speech may appear in situations where they feel uncertain, exposed or “not good enough.”

### Habit

Something that once served a purpose can become an automatic speech habit, appearing before the child has consciously noticed it.

### Speech or voice differences

Not every younger-sounding voice is behavioural. If there are concerns about speech, language, voice or development, professional assessment may be appropriate.

There isn’t one universal “baby voice child.” Understanding the pattern comes before trying to change it.

## Why doesn’t telling them to stop work?

Because “stop” tells a child what you don’t want. It doesn’t necessarily give them awareness of when the change happened, why it happened or how to find another voice when switching feels difficult.

And if stress is one of the things triggering the younger voice, adding more pressure to the moment may be counterproductive.

Chippup is designed to move the work away from constant parent correction and into calm, structured practice.

## Meet Chippup

Chippup is being built around one simple idea:

> Children need the chance to notice, understand and practise their own voice — without shame.

Through listening, reflection, voice practice and eventually interactive challenges, Chippup will help children become more aware of when their voice changes and practise finding a clearer, more natural voice intentionally.

It turns something that can become a daily parent-child battle into a skill the child can begin to own.

## Less “Stop doing that voice.” More “I know how to find my voice.”
