# Is baby talk normal in an older child?

Occasionally acting younger can occur during childhood, particularly around stress and change. But persistent younger-sounding speech can mean different things, and parents shouldn’t have to guess which one applies.

## Behaviour is only one possibility.

A child who can clearly use their usual voice but sometimes shifts into a younger one presents a different question from a child who consistently has difficulty producing speech sounds or whose voice itself sounds unusual. The word “baby voice” can blur those differences.

## When should I ask a professional?

Consider seeking professional advice if:

- your child is consistently difficult to understand
- you are concerned about speech or language development
- there are persistent difficulties producing particular sounds
- their voice is persistently hoarse, strained or otherwise unusual
- they appear to have lost communication abilities they previously had
- the change was sudden or unexplained
- the behaviour is causing significant distress or interfering with daily life
- you are simply worried and would like an assessment

Depending on the concern, appropriate support may include your GP, paediatrician or a speech and language therapist.
